16.2 Backup strategies

16.2.2 Incremental backups

Incremental backups copy only files that were added or changed since the last lower level dump are backed up. Since most of your files, e.g. system files, are static they will not be included in the dump. This can save considerable space and time. A complete restoration of a damaged file system will them require the last full dump followed by the incremental dump(s). Incremental dumps should be done weekly or daily, depending on file system activity and importance.
