ACM SIGMOD '98 Conference Call for Papers
===================================

The 1998 ACM-SIGMOD/PODS Conference will bring together researchers,
practitioners, developers and users to explore new concepts, tools,
and techniques for database management systems. The conference will
provide a forum for the dissemination of original research
contributions as well as contributions related to practical system
design, implementation, and evaluation. The conference will also
feature panel sessions, tutorials, exhibits, demonstrations and a
significant industrial track highlighting DBMS research and
technology. We strongly encourage submission of papers and
participation from the entire international community of database
researchers and practitioners.

Please note that this year the SIGMOD proceedings will be made
available online without charge to SIGMOD members. (It will be
available to others for a fee). This online version will be available
*before* the conference, in late March, to enable conference attendees
to read some of the papers that they are interested in before the
conference itself. Thus, by submitting your paper to SIGMOD, you are
agreeing to provide the final version of your paper in electronic form
(postscript). All authors of accepted papers will also be expected to
sign copyright release forms, and one author of each accepted paper
will be expected to present the paper at the conference. Proceedings
will be distributed at the conference, and will be available for
purchase through the ACM, in both hard copy and electronic form.

SIGMOD SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
-------------------------------------------------------

(Note: these instructions will also be found on our web site, at:
http://www.boeing.com/sigmod98/sigmodcfp.html)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------

For research papers:

(1) Submit an electronic abstract by: Monday, October 27, 1997 (FIRM
DEADLINE)
Instructions:
(a) The preferred method for submitting an abstract is to fill out
the online form at
http://www.boeing.com/sigmod98/sigmodcfp.html.
This form will be available beginning 10/10/97, through
10/27/97. (This
interface is graciously provided by Praveen Seshadri and his
students at Cornell, and exploits the PREDATOR software they
have developed).
(b) If you REALLY cannot fill out the form online, you may submit
your abstract by sending e-mail to sigmod98@almaden.ibm.com.
Your subject line must say "SIGMOD98 Abstract Submission".
The body of your message must contain the title of the paper,
the names of all authors, and an abstract of 250 words or less
in plain ASCII (no postscript, LaTex, Word, etc.). The sender
of the e-mail will be assumed to be the contact author unless
the message indicates otherwise. An e-mail address must be
provided for the contact author.

(2) In response to either form of submission, you will be assigned a
paper number. If you submit the abstract through the online form,
the number will be given immediately upon submission. In the case
of an e-mail submission, you will receive the number later, via an
e-mail message. In either case, you must record this number, as
it will be essential for submitting the actual paper.

(3) Submit your paper by: Monday, November 3, 1997 (FIRM DEADLINE)
Instructions:
(a) Six (6) hard copies of your original manuscript must be
RECEIVED by the program chair at the address below NO LATER
than Monday, 11/3/97. All submissions should be less than 25
pages, double-spaced, in no smaller than 10 point font (and
with normal margins). The address, telephone number, FAX
number, and electronic address of the contact author should be
given on the title page of the submission. In addition, the
paper number you received upon submission of your abstract
MUST appear in the top right-hand corner of that page (on all
copies).

Submissions should be sent to:

Laura M. Haas
IBM Almaden Research Center, K55/B1
650 Harry Road
San Jose, CA 95120-6099 USA

(b) Optionally, you may ALSO submit soft copy of your paper via
the form at http://www.boeing.com/sigmod98/sigmodcfp.html.
This form asks for a URL from which to get the paper, and the
format the paper is in (currently postscript, Word, or html are
supported). We are providing this interface as an experiment
ONLY this year; if it is successful, we may be able to offer
electronic submission for future SIGMODs. The advantage to
you this year is that electronically submitted papers will be
available to the entire program committee (as opposed to just
those assigned to read them); interested pc members may
browse/read additional papers, and therefore be able to serve
as advocates for them. NOTE THAT YOU MUST STILL SUBMIT
HARDCOPY AS SPECIFIED ABOVE.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------

For panel and tutorial proposals:

Each panel or tutorial proposal should include a one-page description
of the subject matter, the name of the organizer, and for panels, a
list of proposed panelists. Submissions will be accepted either in
hard copy, or as plain text (no LaTex, no Word, no postscript) e-mail
messages (send to sigmod98@almaden.ibm.com). Submissions must clearly
identify the type of proposal (e-mail submissions must have this in
the subject line). Descriptions of accepted submissions will appear in
the proceedings. All submissions must be received by the program
chair by Nov. 3, 1997.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------

For the industrial track:

Send an extended abstract (2 pages maximum) to be received by the
program chair by Nov. 3, 1997. Submissions will be accepted either in
hard copy, or as plain text (no LaTex, no Word, no postscript) e-mail
messages (send to sigmod98@almaden.ibm.com). Submissions must clearly
identify the type of proposal (e-mail submissions must have this in
the subject line). Authors of accepted submissions will be invited to
speak in the Industrial Track of the conference and to have their
extended abstract (or an expanded version) included in the SIGMOD
conference proceedings.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------

For demonstrations:

Send a project/system description of up to 5 pages, so that it is
received by the program chair by Nov. 3, 1997. Submissions will be
accepted either in hard copy, or as plain text (no LaTex, no Word, no
postscript) e-mail messages (send to sigmod98@almaden.ibm.com).
Submissions must clearly identify the type of proposal (e-mail
submissions must have this in the subject line). Descriptions of
accepted demonstrations will appear in the proceedings. Authors of
accepted proposals will be expected to provide their own hardware and
software for the demonstration; network connections will be provided.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------

ONCE AGAIN:

For all submissions, please send hard copy of the required materials to
the program chair:

Laura M. Haas
IBM Almaden Research Center, K55/B1
650 Harry Road
San Jose, CA 95120-6099 USA

so that they are received NO LATER than Monday, Nov 3, 1997.

If you choose to use e-mail submission for the industrial track,
panel, demonstration or tutorial proposals, they must be received NO
LATER than Monday, Nov 3, 1997 by sigmod98@almaden.ibm.com. E-mail
submissions must be in plain text, and must clearly identify the type
of proposal in the subject line.

summary of the main results, and a brief explanation of their
significance and relevance to the conference, all suited for the
non-specialist. Technical development of the work, directed to the
specialist, should follow. If the authors believe more details are
necessary to substantiate the main claims of the paper, they may include
a clearly marked appendix to be read at the discretion of the committee.

BEST NEWCOMER AWARD: An award will be given to the best submission, as
judged by the program committee, written solely by authors who have
never published in earlier PODS proceedings.

BEST PAPER AWARD: There will also be an award for the best of all papers
