An opportunity exists for a senior SE researcher to work in Australia, at
the CSIRO (the Australian national Scientific and Industrial Research
Research Organisation).

CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences (CMIS)

Software Engineering Research Leader

CMIS wishes to recruit a senior researcher to provide leadership for its
Software Engineering Research Project (SERG).

SERG is a Project within the Software Engineering Initiative (SEI) cluster
of Projects in the Division. The SEI has the mission of supporting
Australian industry, government and the community through developing and
providing world-class expertise, otherwise unavailable in Australia, in
Software Engineering practices and tools. The SEI cluster currently has
two Projects, Software Engineering Process Improvement and SERG, sited in
Canberra (on ANU campus) and Sydney (Macquarie University). It has a close
association with centres of excellence in universities. The current
research themes in SERG are Dependable Systems and Program Comprehension.

Following restructuring in early 1997, the Division is planning expansion
of the SEI in staffing and in new research themes. The new Research Leader
will play a key role in this expansion.

The broad responsibilities of the SERG Research Leader are:
* to develop research strategies, in consultation with industry, university
collaborators, SEI staff and Divisional management;
* to provide research leadership to members of the SERG Project, through
mentorship, guidance and collaboration;
* to lead the delivery of research outcomes to industry;
* to function as an individual researcher.

The role calls for an enthusiasm for and a commitment to excellence in
research on topics of relevance to industry and to close interaction with
industry. The experience and research skills required are at levels
equivalent to those of a Professor or leader of an industry R&D unit.
Applicants with this level of experience will be considered for appointment
at CSOF8 (Principal Research Scientist) level, which has a salary of
A$78596-A$86195 with superannuation and a private-plated vehicle. Applicants
with lesser experience would be considered for appointment as a CSOF7
(Principal Research Scientist, with a salary of A$65554-A$74070 with
superannuation),

The Division will consider proposals from applicants in any area within
Software Engineering, although preference will be given to specialisations
not otherwise held in Australian centres of excellence in Software
Engineering.

Proposals for location at Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne will be considered.
