University of Alberta
Department of Computing Science

Applications are invited for two tenure-track positions at the Assistant
Professor level as part of a planned expansion of the Department.
Applicants are sought in multimedia systems, an area of expansion,
and, in distributed and parallel systems, database systems,
computer vision and image processing, areas of existing department
strength. Outstanding candidates in other areas and at more senior
ranks will also be considered. The successful candidates
should have strong software systems backgrounds.

Responsibilities for all positions include research as well as
teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Excellent support is provided to the successful applicants for
establishing their research programs.

The Department consists of 35 academic and 23 support staff, and offers
a graduate program with approximately 100 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.
Our goal is to have a graduate program that is among the best in
North America. Current computer equipment consists of a network
interconnecting several multiprocessor Sun and SGI servers.
A very well-equipped image systems laboratory was recently created
in cooperation with and the support of HP. The Department is
well connected via the Campus FDDI network to remainder of the
campus units and the Internet. Experimental ATM network connections
are available for research projects. There are well supported research
laboratories in: algorithmics, artificial intelligence,
cognitive science, communication networks, computer graphics, computer
vision and robotics, database, parallel and distributed systems, and
software engineering. A multimedia research lab was recently established
and a multimedia research institute is proposed.

The salary offered will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Send curriculum vitae, the names of three references and
up to three reprints or copies of important publications.
A Ph.D. or equivalent is the minimum qualification; new Ph.D.'s should
include a copy of their transcript. Applications will be accepted until
1 March 1998 with employment commencing on 1 July 1998.
