There has been a tremendous interest in the use of multimedia in the past
few years. With the widespread availability of networks connecting a large
number of computers, it is important to consider the various architectural
and algorithmic issues related to distributed multimedia systems. This
special session is planned to evaluate the present state of the art in
communication and computing requirements for distributed multimedia systems
as well as to explore future directions of research and development. Topics
include (but are not limited to):

* Challenges and applications of
multimedia computing * End to end QoS
* Transport protocols for * Representation of digital images
multimedia communication and video
* Multimedia information * Multimedia servers
retrieval and indexing * Requirements of multimedia
* Compression techniques: digital information
audio, image, video * Scalability of multimedia
* Network support for multimedia systems
communication
