The University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS)
and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland,
College Park, have an immediate opening for a post-doctoral researcher or
faculty research associate in the field of database management systems.
Specializations of particular interest include distributed query processing
and optimization; wide-area information networking; and heterogeneous
information systems.

This person would be primarily responsible for the design and development of
a distributed data management testbed involving database access; web data
sources; and information retrieval techniques. The work would be done in
conjunction with a research group consisting of 3-4 graduate students under
the direction of professors Michael Franklin and Louiqa Raschid.

Ideally, qualified applicants would have a doctoral degree in the field and a
track record of publications and systems development experience. Applicants
at the M.S. level with significant systems development experience in a
research or advanced development setting and who are interested in
establishing a research record are also encouraged to apply. The initial
appointment would be for 1 year, with the possibility of extensions for an
additional two years.

The University of Maryland, College Park, is located inside the Washington
D.C. Beltway, minutes from NASA Goddard and NIH, and convenient to
downtown DC, northern Virginia, and Baltimore.
Information on database research at Maryland can be found at
http://www.cs.umd.edu/areas/db.
The University strongly encourages applications from minorities / women.

For best consideration, applications should be received by January 15, 1998.
