BACKGROUND

The first International Hong Kong Computer Society Database Workshop was
held in Hong Kong in December 1989, organized by the Hong Kong Computer
Society in corporation with Hong Kong Polytechnic. Its main objective was=
to
promote database technologies in Hong Kong. Its scope was a broad coverag=
e of
database advanced technologies, methodologies and software tools. The wor=
kshop
has been an international annual event ever since then.

SCOPE

In today's information technologies, a single database can rarely meet a
company's needs. Instead, multi-databases is the norm for most companies =
to
run their daily operations and decision support systems. The technologies=
to
develop and manage the multi-databases can be divided into data mining, d=
ata
warehousing and client/server databases.

Advances in data gathering, storage, and distribution technologies has ou=
t
performed than the techniques for analyzing and understanding data. There=
is
an urgent need for automated data mining and knowledge discovery in datab=
ases.
Data mining is used to discover patterns, clusters and models from data w=
hich
are then rendered in operational forms that are easy for people to visual=
ize
and understand.

It is a general rule that the bigger the database, the more difficult it =
is
to sustain high levels of performance. The key objective of data warehous=
ing
is to provide business executives with flexible access to vast quantities=
of
information through loosely structured queries. Data warehousing is a
continual process which enables a corporation to assemble operational and
other data from a variety of internal and external sources. It transforms=
that
data into consistent, high-quality, business information, distribute that
information to the points of maximum value within the organizations and
provide easy, flexible and fast access for busy non-technical users.

In a client/server systems, users are capable of interconnecting various
platforms efficiently and transparently to distribute data and applicatio=
n
program across heterogeneous systems in a computer network. Application
processing is developed between client and server workstations. The
processing is initiated by the client and performed by the server, and bo=
th
client and server cooperate to run an application. A client/server system
increases processing power by separating the database management system f=
rom
the application; the client as the front-end system handling the user
interface and server as backend system accessing the database.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS

Authors are invited to submit previous unpublished contributions for
inclusion in the workshop. The papers, limited to 20 pages or 3,000 words=
will
be carefully reviewed. The workshop will accept no more than 200 attendee=
s in
order to foster an interactive atmosphere among participants. The program
committee co-chairmen are:

Dr Joseph Fong Professor John G Hughes
Department of Computer Science Faculty of Informatics
City University of Hong Kong University of Ulster
Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong Co. Antrim BT37 OQB, UK

The email address for submission is csjfong@cityu.edu.hk

To contribute, please submit 5 copies of the full paper to the Program
committee chairman. Tutorial sessions and exhibitions will be held during=
the
workshop. Proposal for tutorials and exhibitions on the state of the art =
of
database should be sent to Dr Joseph Fong:

PUBLICATION

Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings which will =
be
published by Springer-Verlag. We anticipate that the proceedings will be
published as Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science.
