Obtaining the LWGate Source Distribution

Line Image

The first step to installing the LWGate on your own server is to obtain the source distribution. This page discusses the copyright issues and guides you through the process of obtaining and installing the LWGate source. The source distribution is a gzipped tar which contains the Perl source, the two LWGate graphics (the logo and the button), a short README file, and a copy of the GNU General Public Licence (GPL) version 2.

Copyright Issues

The LWGate Perl source and all other files included in the source distribution, except the copy of the GPL, are Copyright 1995 by David W. Baker. This program is distributed under the terms of the GPL. An exerpt from that licence explains some of the implications of that agreement:

This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.

Install the Source

Here are the steps to installing the LWGate source:

  1. Obtain the gzipped tar LWGate source distribution
  2. Un-gzip and extract the tar file.
  3. Look at the README file. (Yup - I've had to make this instruction explicit.) It will identify the purpose of the other files in the distribution.
  4. Place the Perl source of the LWGate called "lwgate" within your HTTP server's CGI directory. Make sure that the server has appropriate permissions to read and execute the script.
  5. Place the graphic files in any HTTP readable directory on your server, or perhaps another server. You will specify an appropriate URL for the script to find these files, so as long as they are available from the WWW, you can place them just abou t anywhere.
  6. Read, understand, and keep your copy of the GPL.

The next step is to configure the LWGate.
