LWGate Icon Mailing List WWW Gateway

Please note that development of the LWGate has been frozen for three years. Use it if you like, but I won't act on any feature requests. It was my first Perl program - an endeavor to learn the language.

Current Version: 1.16 [Version History]

Welcome to the Mailing List WWW Gateway (LWGate) World Wide Web page. The LWGate is a CGI script, written in Perl, which tries to merge the technologies of the WWW and mailing lists by:

With the LWGate, people browsing the WWW can read a description of a mailing list, subscribe to a list, easily search a list's message archives, browse the archives in a hypertext format, search for other mailing lists, and much more. The lists m ade available by the LWGate are defined by the script administrator; this script does not provide a global gateway to all existing mailing lists, only those which request to be added. The LWGate supports mailing lists provided by LISTSERV(TM), List Processor 6, Majordomo, and SmartList servers.

The LWGate is freely available under the GNU General Public Licence. See below for directions on obtaining your own copy, but note that the NetSpace LWGate will accept additions to its database.

Installing the Mailing List WWW Gateway

So, you want to install the LWGate on your WWW server? Well, you first will need a HTTP server which can run CGI scripts and has Perl installed. If that is the case, there are four steps to installing the LWGate, listed below.

NB: This script was developed and tested exclusively on Linux UNIX boxes running the NCSA httpd 1.3 and Perl 4. I cannot anticipate all (if any) changes would be necessary to install the script on other platforms.

Note, that if you have problems installing the LWGate script, please do as much troubleshooting as possible before contacting me. I will not be able to debug your server configuration, and you should make sure that the LWGate is properly set up w ith your server as a CGI script.

However, all bug reports, comments, criticisms, and suggestions related to the LWGate itself are most welcome.

Special thanks to Gary S. Trujillo, who recovered all of these directions when my server's hard drive crashed.
