CALL FOR PAPERS

---------------------------------------------
Workshop on Mobile Applications
July 19, 1998
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
---------------------------------------------

in conjunction with
Sixth International Symposium on Modeling,
Analysis and Simulation of Computer and
Telecommunication Systems (MASCOTS '98)

July 19-24, 1998
Complex Dejardins Hotel, Montreal, Canada

With advances in telecommunications technology over the past 10 years, computer
users now enjoy virtually unlimited access to any kind of information they
need. Wireless technology is being used to link portable computer equipment
to corporate databases and other sources of necessary information. The first
wave of applications for this environment were the same ones used in the
former, wired-communications systems, but the assumptions inherent in their
design (properties of the communication channel, capabilities of the mobile
device) are no longer valid. As the limitations of this approach became
apparent, researchers increasingly concentrated on designing and implementing
ADAPTIVE applications. Such applications (and the communications software they
are based upon) are more aware of the limited and changing environments,
allowing the functionality of the mobile device and the traffic being sent
over a given link to be customized for the best performance possible.

The workshop will explore issues related to the development and deployment
of such adaptive mobile applications. In particular, it will focus on new
designs for mobile applications, experiences with deploying and managing
mobile applications, and how to support such applications with appropriate
runtime systems. We invite authors to submit papers on or related to the
list of topics below. Submissions are expected to be original work and will
be fully refereed. Papers should be written in English, formatted as HTML
document, and printable in 20 pages with a 12pt normal text size, including
abstract, tables, and references.

Topics of particular interest:
------------------------------
- developing a mobile computing infrastructure
- measuring and negotiating QoS
- operating system support
- new mobile application design paradigms
- implementing mobile applications (languages, development tools/environments)
- deploying mobile applications
- management of mobile devices and applications

The workshop will consist of paper presentations and invited talks. It
should be of interest to researchers and developers from academia and
industry who are involved in the development and deployment of applications
and network infrastructure for wireless and mobile environments, such as
the PCS infrastructure currently being established in Canada.

Deadlines:
----------
Submission of manuscripts: February 28th, 1998
Notification of acceptance: April 30th, 1998
Final copy for proceedings: June 1st, 1998

Papers must be submitted electronically. Submit the URL of the HTML
document to tkunz@sce.carleton.ca, we will copy the paper from your
webserver. Alternatively, send the complete HTML document as e-mail
to the above address. Final versions of accepted papers will be
published both in a printed proceedings and on the workshop website.
We are currently exploring the possibility of publishing extended
versions of the best workshop papers in a special issue of the ACM/Baltzer
Journal of Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) (for information on
MONET, see http://www.baltzer.nl/monet/). Check the workshop webpage for
more up-to-date information.
