========================================================================
Sponsored by:
Japan Society of Software Science and Technology (JSSST)
Osaka University

In cooperation with:

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) - requesting
Virtual Reality Society of Japan (VRSJ)

*****======================================================================
OBJECTIVES

Due to remarkable progress and development made in computer and
communication hardware/software system technologies, we can now easily
obtain large volumes of multimedia data through advanced computer
networks, store and handle them in our own personal disk devices. In
order to build a highly advanced information-based society,
sophisticated and integrated processing technologies of multimedia
content are attracting ever increasing attention in various service
areas including broadcasting, publishing, medical treatment,
entertainment, and communications. The prime concerns of these
technologies are how to acquire multimedia content data from the real
world, how to automatically organize and store these obtained data in
databases for sharing and reuse, and how to generate and create new
attractive multimedia content using the stored data. This conference
will bring together researchers and practitioners from academia,
industry, and public agencies to present and discuss recent advances
in the acquisition, management, retrieval, creation, and utilization
of large multimedia content. Artistic and innovative applications
through the active use of multimedia content are also subjects of
interest. The conference aims at covering the following particular
areas:

* Dynamic multimedia data modeling, and intelligent structuring of
content based on active, bottom-up, and self-organized strategies.
* Access architecture, querying facilities, and distribution
mechanisms for multimedia content.
* Synthesis of virtual and augmented real environments using large
multimedia data for the creation of multimedia content, and their
applications to mobile computing environments.

SCOPE

AMCP'98 focuses on advanced multimedia content processing. We solicit
high-quality technical papers and contest participants on any topic
related, but are not limited, to the following issues:

* Dynamic modeling of multimedia content
* Intellectual structuring of multimedia content
* Query models and languages on multimedia content and their
evaluation
* Access control models for multimedia content
* Distribution models and systems for multimedia content
* Image/video processing for multimedia content
* Virtual reality and augmented reality using multimedia content
* Multimedia content processing in mobile computing environments
* Broadcast applications
* Application systems based on multimedia standards

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION

AMCP'98 plans to conduct high quality technical sessions, and a
dynamic media contest of inspiration-rich artistic designs and
technical innovations. Both will be reviewed by an international
program committee. The proceedings of AMCP'98 will be distributed
during the conference. We are also planning to publish the revised
proceedings after the conference by Springer-Verlag as a volume in the
Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.

*** Technical Paper ***
Send five (5) copies of the full paper which covers unpublished and
original research materials, no longer than 5000 words, by June 1,
1998 to:
Prof. Shojiro Nishio
Department of Information Systems Engineering
Graduate School of Engineering
Osaka University
2-1 Yamadaoka, Suita, Osaka 565-0871, Japan
Phone: +81-6-879-7820
The cover page must include authors' names, affiliations, complete
postal/E-mail addresses, telephone/facsimile numbers, and keywords.
Papers must be sent by regular mail or courier. We do not accept
papers sent by FAX or electronic submission.

*** Dynamic Media Contest ***
AMCP'98 is a unique opportunity to present your work to the world's
foremost researchers, artists and content designers in multimedia. We
invite demonstrations of your original work using interactive media
that envisions our augmented future. Two tracks are organized for the
contest: (a) the network media content track for demonstrations which
can be accessed through the network such as VRML, JAVA, and network
games, and (b) the exhibition content track for demonstrations with
advanced interaction techniques that can be evaluated only by actual
installation at the exhibition site. Please send an abstract that
includes the project title and a brief description (technical
background, objectives and intentions) with system requirements of
your demonstration by June 1, 1998 to:
Prof. Shinji Shimojo
Computation Center
Osaka University
5-1 Mihogaoka,Ibaraki, Osaka 567-0047, Japan
Phone: +81-6-879-8793
Video (limited to 1/2 inch NTSC VHS format) or URL information of web
page which clearly demonstrates your project is welcomed. The cover
page must include authors' names, affiliations, complete postal/E-mail
addresses, and telephone/facsimile numbers. Accepted proposals will
be exhibited at the conference venue which has high-speed network
capability. Excellent projects voted by the screening members and
conference participants through either network or on-site, will be
awarded prizes. For more information on submission to the dynamic
media contest, visit the AMCP'98 web page.
