String Processing and Information Retrieval:
A South American Symposium

Santa Cruz de La Sierra, Bolivia

September 9 -- 11, 1998

1. What is SPIRE'98?

SPIRE'98 is a South American Symposium on String Processing
and Information Retrieval which is in its fifth edition. The
first four editions focused primarily on string processing
and were called WSP (Workshop on String Processing). Starting
in 1998, the focus of the workshop will be broadened to inclu-
de the area of information retrieval due to its increasing
relevance and its inter-relationship with the area of string
processing.

2. Objectives of SPIRE'98

For many years now, we have observed the research communities
of information retrieval and string processing working relati-
vely far apart with little cooperation (if any). Despite such
reality, it is our belief that the two communities deal with
closely related problems and that join efforts among them
would have good potential to move forward the research fron-
tiers in both fields.

The SPIRE'98 symposium, in its new format, recognizes the po-
tential benefits of cross-fertilizing the research areas of
string processing and information retrieval and offers a sin-
gular opportunity for researchers interested in working with
problems related to both areas (for instance, indexing, ran-
king based on full text retrieval, approximate string matching
retrieval and classification, interfaces based on full text,
etc).

3. Topics

SPIRE'98 covers research in all aspects of string processing
and information retrieval. Typical topics of interest include
(but are not limited to):

* String Processing: dictionary algorithms, text searching,
pattern alignment, DNA sequencing and applications in mo-
lecular biology, voice or natural language processing.

* Information Retrieval: IR modeling, interface design, vi-
sualization, cross-lingual IR systems, multimedia IR, fil-
tering, digital libraries, information extraction, sys-
tems and implementation issues, experimentation.

4. Important Dates:

Paper submission: APRIL 6th, 1998 (posting date)
Authors notification: MAY 22nd, 1998
Camera ready: JUNE 5th, 1998

5. Submission Instructions

Authors are requested:

- To prepare 4 copies of an extended abstract or full draft
paper of at most 15 pages in standard 11pt Latex style to
be sent to the chair of the Program Committee no later than
APRIL 6th, 1998 (posting date).

- To prepare a cover page containing the paper title, the na-
mes of all authors, an indication of the author to be con-
tacted, and the affiliation of such author (including full
address, phone/fax numbers, and email address).

- To send the submission package (4 paper copies plus the co-
ver page) to the address of the chair as follows.

Email: {\em berthier@dcc.ufmg.br}

- To send an email message to the program chair by April 6th,
1998, communicating the intention to submit, the paper ti-
tle, and its abstract.

6. Symposium Site

Santa Cruz is the second largest city in Bolivia and the main
commercial point of the country. Located in the sierra at an al-
titude of 500 meters, enjoys a mild sub tropical climate. Nearby
there are old jesuit missions and the most eastern Inca ruin
(Samaipata).

The conference itself will be held at the Iberoamerican Center
for Formation and Development (CIFD or Casa de Espa\~na) that
the spanish government supports there. They have a very good in-
frastructure and a long time experience organizing international
events.

>From Santa Cruz you can reach very easily to La Paz, capital of
the country, located at an altitude of 3600 meters. From there
you can visit Tiahuanaco, one of the oldest civilizations in
America, Lake Titicaca, Copacabana, the nearby mountains, etc.
If you can travel further, there are flights from La Paz to Cuz-
co, Peru, the center of the Inca empire. In addition to visiting
the surroundings you can go to Machu Pichu.
