CALL FOR PAPERS
QPMIDS98

Second International Workshop on

Query Processing and Multimedia Issues in Distributed Systems
(QPMIDS)

http://www.rd.nacsis.ac.jp/~andres/qpmids98.html

August 26-27th 1998

in conjunction with 9th International Conference DEXA98

Vienna, Austria

1 Description

The QPMIDS workshop seeks to bring together distributed multimedia
information systems researchers and developers from these fields to
assess the state of the art and practice in solving real-time multimedia

query processing problems, to identify solution techniques and
algorithms, and to introduce promising future research directions.
The topics of the workshop cover advanced multimedia computing
technologies where new approaches to support on-line accesses to
information are needed.
The explosion in volume and complexity of digital information that
people want to access and analyse influences the evolution of the
multimedia distributed systems.
The kinds of data referred to by 'multimedia data' expand. Still images,
texts, and books were included in this category, several years ago.
Recently, moving pictures, especially video, audio, as well as 3D
objects in virtual realities are added in the list. Client-server
architecture is a practical approach to support heterogeneous data
management (video clips, audio, images, and books). Several issues still
need to be tackled in order to meet the challenge of the multimedia As a
first issue, modeling these kinds of data is necessary for storing,
retrieving, and editing these data adequately.
The second issue is concerned with quality of transfer of these
data through networks. The data and users are distributed over computer
networks and real-time data transfer is required. So good quality
transfer of data among them is needed. The integration of emerging
standards such as CORBA or OLE2 may provide new communication
capabilities in order to increase QoS inside distributed multimedia
systems.
The third issue is the system architecture issue (distributed shared
memory, load balancing algorithm, ...). Current systems are insufficient

to support the management of multimedia data owning to their
time-sampled nature. Problems such as data placement, buffer management,

admission control and load balancing still exist. The extension of the
database systems to support distributed multimedia applications thus
require new mechanisms to ensure the synchronized presentation of
multimedia data exchanges.
