INFORMATION SYSTEMS
-------------------

Special Issue on Semistructured Data

Announcement and Call for Papers

Purpose:
--------
In recent years we have seen an increasing interest in managing data
that does not easily or naturally conform to a common data model such
as the relational model or an object-oriented one, nor does it fit
into conventional database schemas. Such data may include both
structured and unstructured portions and is hence termed
"semistructured." Semistructured data emerges in a variety of
non-traditional applications of databases and information systems,
including the integration of heterogeneous sources of data, databases
in molecular biology, or management systems for web sites. Data in
these applications has irregular structure: some elements have missing
components, others may have multiple occurrences of the same
component, different types may be used to represent the same kind of
information, etc. Generally, data lacks an a-priori given schema, and
is self-describing. The field of semistructured data has been the
focus of considerable interest recently, as is demonstrated by an
increasing number of research projects undertaken in this direction.
A special issue of Information Systems is planned for Volume 23, Issue
8, 1998, on the subject of semistructured data.

Papers:
-------
Technical papers describing original and previously unpublished
research, and currently not under review by another journal or a
conference, are solicited on topics related to semistructured data, in
particular its design, implementation, management, and usage.
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

* data models
* query operations and languages for semistructured data
* query processing, optimization, and decomposition
* semistructured data and the Web
* finding structure in semistructured data
* object-orientation and correspondence
* discovering schema information
* systems for managing semistructured data
* semistructured data as an integration for heterogeneous sources
* data loading and conversion
* prototypes and their evaluation
* implementation techniques
* data structures and access techniques
* storage management
* indexes for semistructured data

How to Submit:
--------------
Paper submission will be handled electronically. Authors should email
a PostScript version of their full paper to one of the editors of the
special issue (see addresses below).

Important Dates:
----------------
Submissions due: February 15, 1998
