International workshop on

SECURITY AND INTEGRITY
OF DATA INTENSIVE APPLICATIONS

in conjunction with the
Ninth International Conference on
Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA'98)
http://www.ifs.tuwien.ac.at/dexa98

to be held in Vienna, Austria, 24-28 August, 1998
(right before IFIP world computer congress)

GOALS and TOPICS of INTEREST
----------------------------

Data intensive applications are currently one of the fastest growing
and most practically relevant application areas of database and expert
systems technology. They are a critical component of the emerging
''distributed information environments'' that will provide people with
universal access to virtually all areas of human knowledge. Most data
intensive applications share common characteristics: They are based on
large heterogeneous information sources often connected via open
computer networks, they support a large number of users, they provide
an infrastructure that enables easy access to different kinds of
services, and the quality of their services including their security
and integrity is crucial for their success.

Providing security and integrity of data intensive applications is an
area where we have to renew the discussion about traditional computer
and database security techniques. We probably will have to destroy
outdated ideas and we will have to adjust the existing techniques to
better meet the requirements of advanced applications that span
geographical as well as organisational boundaries. This workshop seeks
to establish the basis for an ongoing dialogue between the database
and expert systems community, the security specialists, and people
involved in all aspects of using, implementing and researching data
intensive applications. Papers are solicited describing advances in
all areas of security and integrity of data intensive applications,
including, but not limited to the areas of:

- heterogeneous information, multi-database systems,
- data mining, data warehousing and legacy systems,
- multimedia databases, virtual malls, and kiosk systems,
- agent technology, locating services,
- intellectual property, watermarking, notarisation services,
- web documents, digital libraries and publishing environments,
- trading digital goods, electronic negotiation,
- architectures for secure and fair electronic commerce,
- business processes, transactions, and workflow management,
- users, organisational requirements and settings,
- risk, economic security cost and benefit models,
- auditing, intrusion detection, administration tools,
- electronic cash, wallets, pay-per-view systems,
- security paradigm shifts, new definitions of security,
- privacy, anonymity, and trust,
- ...

SUBMISSION DETAILS
------------------
Authors are invited to submit papers describing both theoretical and
practical work dealing with the above or related issues. Papers which
describe ongoing research or provide an excellent surveying work are
welcomed as well. Papers should be in English and may be submitted as
regular papers (up to 5000 words) or short papers (up to 2500 words).
The cover page should include the name and affiliation of the
author(s), contact address, e-mail, fax and telephone.

Electronic submission is preferred. Please send an e-mail containing
your submission in postscript to:

dexa98ws@wi-inf.uni-essen.de

Authors intending to submit a paper are invited to send an e-mail of
interest by March 6, 1998 to pernul@wi-inf.uni-essen.de (with a cc to
mandry@wi-inf.uni-essen.de) containing title, authors and a short
abstract (100 words) of the paper.

Alternatively, authors should send 4 copies of their paper to the
workshop chair: Prof. Dr. Guenther Pernul, Department of Information
Systems, University of Essen, Universitaetsstr. 9, D-45141 Essen,
Germany. Please note that electronic submission is preferred.

Important dates:

- E-mail of Interest by: March, 6
- Submission Deadline: March, 15
- Notification: May, 20
- Final Version: June, 15
- Workshop: August, 27/28

Papers accepted for presentation will be published by the IEEE
Computer Society in a volume of proceedings of the DEXA'98 workshops.

Program Committee:

ATTENDANCE
----------

The workshop will be rather informal and will encourage discussion and
interaction. Authors of accepted papers will be expected to present
their work at the workshop. All attendees must register for the
