Postdoc and senior PhD student Opportunities at the Database Research=20
Group, Department of Computer Science, Swiss Federal Institute of=20
Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) under the CHOROCHRONOS project

The Database Research Group of the Department of Computer Science
at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH
Zurich) is a partner in the European CHOROCHRONOS project. In this=20
project, positions at the Postdoc level or senior PhD student are=20
available in the area of spatial and temporal databases.

Successful candidates will be expected to work in the area of
architectural issues for a spatio-temporal DBMS on topics such
as:
- integration of spatial and temporal extensions into an object
oriented or object relational system
- building a cooperation framework for spatial and temporal
database systems
- extending a database kernel system with indexing techniques
suitable for spatial and temporal data

The positions are available for 6-18 month, but shorter
appointments will also be considered. Candidates must meet the
following requirements=20

1. must be less than 35 years of age at the time of the
appointment.

2. must be nationals of a Member State of the European Community
or of an Associated State (Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway,
Israel).

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ETH ZURICH

The official name is Eidgen=F6ssische Technische Hochschule or in
English: Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

ETH Z=FCrich has a staff of some 6000 employees (320 are
professors) and 11000 students who are working towards degrees in
Architecture, Engineering, Mathematics and Science. More than
half of the sudents are enrolled in Engineering programmes. ETH
Z=FCrich has a smaller sister institution in Lausanne (EPFL, Ecole
Polytechnique Federale a Lausanne). These two technical
universities are funded directly by the federal government,
whereas all other Swiss universities are funded by the cantons
(member states of the swiss federation) in which they are
located.
