The EDBT Workshop on Workflow Management Systems
March 27-28, 1998

In conjunction with the VI Intl. Conference on Extending
Database Technology (EDBT98), Valencia, Spain.
March 23-27, 1998

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
A workflow is usually defined as a sequence of tasks executed by automated
systems or people to carry out a (business) process. These processes (and
corresponding workflows) are built by linking together diverse activities
and specifying the flow of data and control among them. Workflow and process
management have recently gained interest in many application areas, including
banking and insurance industries, manufacturing, health care, service order
processing, and collaborative software environments.

We solicit papers on novel approaches and technologies that can address
the limitations of current commercial workflow systems and extend the
scope and mission of workflow management systems to support workflow
automation in complex real-world environments involving heterogeneous,
autonomous, and distributed information systems. Papers and/or position
statements that can serve to enhance discussion at the workshop are also
solicited. This workshop will provide a forum for the dissemination of
research contributions as well as contributions related to implementation
and evaluation of current workflow management systems.

Specific topics include, but are not limited to:
-Requirements of business and engineering processes and
the limitations of existing commercial products in implementing them
-Workflow specification languages
-Languages and methodology for modeling enterprise information and processes.
-coordination of human activities and automated business processes in
workflow management systems.
-Utilizing extended transaction models into workflow applications
-Internet Workflow Transactions
-Use of multiple workflow infrastructure technologies, such as CORBA,
Lotus Notes and Internet.
-Workflow issues in health information systems
-Interoperability Issues and Information modeling
-Industrial Challenges with Legacy Information Systems
-Web infrastructure and paradigms for doing business and commerce on the web
-Utilizing software engineering principles in modeling workflows
-Transactional workflows.
-Workflow management and agent technology
-Workflow transaction models
-Business Process modelling and representation of workflows
-Dynamic and user defined workflows

IMPORTANT DATES:
Paper submission : January 7, 1998
Author notification: February 7, 1998
Camera-ready version due: February 20, 1998
Workshop: March 27/28 (right after EDBT)

PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Electronic submission is required. The postscript version of an
extended abstract (at most 12 double-spaced pages in fonts not smaller
than 11pt or 3000 words) should be submitted to EDBT-WFMS@cs.iupui.edu
no later than January 7, 1998. In addition, the authors should submit
electronically to EDBT-WFMS@cs.iupui.edu a cover page containing the
paper title, authors' names, contact author and full address, e-mail
and ph-fax numbers. Papers will be selected based on their significance,
timeliness, relevance, and clarity of presentation. Papers accepted for
presentation will be included in the workshop proceedings to be
distributed at the Workshop. Formal proceedings will be published after the
workshop. Selected papers will be invited to be published in the form of
an edited book.

conference and at the same location, Valencia, Spain. Valencia is ensconced
in fertile terrain on the shores of the Mediterranean close to the mouth
of the Turia river. Valencia and its environs constitute a first rate
tourist center in both infrastructure and alternatives for the discerning
visitor. Of historical interest yet cosmopolitan, the city has grown and
adapted to the times conserving its rich heritage while becoming a leading
economic and financial center in present day Spain. The conference will be
held at the Palau de Pineda (Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo) and
