OBJECTIVES
___________________________________________________________________________

Both the way we look at data through a database system, and the nature of
data we ask such a system to manage, have drastically evolved over the last
decade, moving from text, images, sound, and video to compositions of these
media as known from multimedia applications. Visual representations are
used extensively within new user interfaces and are an essential
requirement for accessing data through a database system. Powerful visual
approaches are being experimented for data manipulation, including the
investigation of three-dimensional display techniques and animated
interfaces. On the other hand, many existing applications use images to
enhance the quality and richness of data manipulation services.

Both areas need further research and applications to experiment and improve
actual solutions or to invent new ones. IFIP 2.6 has already devoted three
successful conferences to explore the domain of visual information
management. This conference is the fourth in the series. As the preceding
editions, it aims at covering both areas: visual interfaces to database
systems and management of visual datai by database systems. As in the past,
the program will comprise invited talks given by leaders in the field:
* Arnold Smeulders (University of Amsterdam, NL)
"Crossing the Divide in search for Image Databases"
* Moshe Zloof (Hewlett-Packard Labs, USA)
(Title to be announced - Joint session with AVI)
Its target audience and participants are researchers and practitioners active
or interested in user interfaces, human-computer communication, knowledge
representation and management, image processing and understanding, multimedia
database techniques, and computer vision.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
___________________________________________________________________________

Papers should be up to twenty pages long, at least one-and-a-half-spaced,
in font size at least 10 (8000 words).

Panel proposals should be at most two pages long and should include at
least a tentative list of panelists.

Demonstration proposals should be at most two pages long and should specify
the kind of hardware required.

All submissions should be sent in paper form (six copies) to one of the
program chairs at the addresses below. The proceedings will be published by
Chapman & Hall. Authors are asked to follow the guidelines for preparing
their papers (see Chapman&Hall LaTex macros). Submissions should indicate
the main topics they address.

IMPORTANT DATES
___________________________________________________________________________

November 30, 1997 Deadline for submission of papers, panel proposals,
and demonstrations
February 15, 1998 Notification of acceptance/rejection
March 15, 1998 Deadline for having final papers at the publisher

FORMAT
___________________________________________________________________________

The IFIP 2.6 Visual Databases series has established a tradition of highly
appreciated working conferences, where quality of presentations is
preferred to quantity. Following the tested format of the previous
successful VDB conferences, VDB-4 will be a three-day live-in working
conference with limited attendance and extensive time for presentations and
discussions. VDB-4 will follow immediately AVI'98, Advanced Visual
Interfaces, L'Aquila, May 25-27, 1998. The combination of the two
conferences together promises to be a very special event.

VENUE
___________________________________________________________________________

Founded in 1245, L'Aquila is one of the most renowned medieval towns in
Italy. Located in Abruzzo, a region in the center of Italy, L'Aquila
maintains intact the ancient charm: the ruined remains of Amiternum, the
castles, the monasteries, the churches and the chapels speak to us of
history, of art, of the spirit of ancient civilizations. A visit to the
main town's monuments will reveal the superb facades of the Basilica of S.
Maria di Collemaggio, a splendid piece of work of Romanesque-Gothic
architecture, and of the Renaissance Basilica of S. Berardino; the
originality of the Fountains with the 99 Spouts (13th century), almost a
symbol of the city; the grandeur of the magnificent fortress, built during
the Spanish domination (16th century), and now containing the National
Museum of Abruzzo, and a Conference Center. Touristic itineraries cannot
exclude the surrounding environment, where Nature enchants: the Gran Sasso
d'Italia with its majestic peaks, with the valley of river Aterno, with its
high plains, its woods, grottos, lakes and springs; the National Park, rich
in woods, springs and waterfalls, and in an exceptional variety of flora
and fauna, one of the most interesting and picturesque mountainous areas in
Italy.
