nominations for the position of Chair of the Computer Science
Department. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent
degree in Computer Science or a related field, and have
experience that would permit nomination for the rank of
tenured professor. The position is available in July, 1998 or
September, 1998.

The Department also invites applications for a tenure-track
Assistant Professor position available after September, 1997.
Other ranks will be considered for qualified applicants. The
area of specialization is open, but preference will be given
to applicants whose research areas complement those of the
current faculty and the prospective chair. Applicants should
hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Computer Science or a
related field, and should have excellent research and
teaching credentials.

The Department has 13 tenure-track faculty positions, and in
addition employs several full-time instructors. There are
about 300 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students;
the undergraduate program is accredited by CSAB. Research
areas include: databases, software engineering, computer
security, theory of computing, parallel processing, and
programming languages. In addition to traditional teaching
and scholarship the Department stresses interaction with the
computer industry. There is ample opportunity for consulting
work with industry, and research/teaching cooperation with
other academic departments, both at PSU and at other Oregon
universities.

Oregon's need for technical higher education centers on the
Portland metro area, which is home to a computer industry
that forms a large and growing sector of the state's economy.
PSU is the main urban campus of the Oregon State System of
Higher Education, and is located in the heart of one of the
most livable cities in North America. PSU is at the forefront
of the new "urban universities" that stress service to
non-traditional students and interaction with the community.
The Pacific Northwest is justly renowned for its spectacular
outdoor recreation opportunities and its relaxed lifestyle.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae and names of
three references. Send applications for department chair to:
Chair Search Committee, Department of Computer Science,
Portland State University, Box 751, Portland, OR 97207.
Applications for the faculty position should be sent to the
Faculty Search Committee at the same address. Screening will
begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled.
