ACM SIGMOD/PODS '98 Joint Conference Final Call for Papers
1-4 June 1998, Seattle, USA

Please monitor http://www.boeing.com/sigmod98/ for current information.

Message from General Chairs for 1998

The ACM SIGMOD/PODS Joint Conference aims at fostering close
collaboration
between the theoretical and applied database communities. As we near
the dawn of the next century, database technology remains essential, and
continues to rapidly evolve as more complex and massive information
management requirements emerge. Our society can benefit greatly from the
full maturation of database technology, and we hope that the
collaboration that will result from this joint conference will play a
seminal role in stimulating this process. We encourage you to play a
part in this important event.

The PODS and SIGMOD conferences have separate program committees and
will have separate proceedings. Authors must submit their papers to the
conference that they feel is most appropriate for their work. We
recommend that theoretical papers be submitted to PODS and applied ones
to SIGMOD. The same paper or different versions of the same paper should
not be submitted to both conferences simultaneously. The two conferences
will overlap for two days, but each conference will have a separate
third day without overlap. There will be only one registration process
for the joint, four-day conference. Attendees will receive both
proceedings and be encouraged to attend sessions in both conferences.
Some of the technical events, the lunches, and the outing will be joint
events.

Once again, you are invited to participate in what we plan to be an
exciting and enriching event for 1998 in Seattle, Washington.

Sincerely,
Pamela Drew, SIGMOD General Chair
Alberto Mendelzon, PODS General Chair

contact author should be given on the title page of the submission. A
limit of 10 pages is placed on submissions. Font size should be at least
10 points. The abstract must provide sufficient detail to allow the
program committee to assess its merits and should include appropriate
references to and comparisons with the literature. It is recommended
that each submission
begin with a succinct statement of the problem a summary of the main
results, and a brief explanation of their significance and relevance to
the conference, all suited for the non-specialist. Technical development
of the work, directed to the specialist, should follow. If the authors
believe more details are necessary to substantiate the main claims of
the paper, they may include a clearly marked appendix to be read at the
discretion of the committee.

1998 ACM SIGMOD
International Conference on Management of Data
Seattle, Washington, June 2-4, 1998

The 1998 ACM-SIGMOD Conference will bring together researchers,
practitioners, developers and users to explore new concepts, tools, and
techniques for database management systems. The conference will provide
a forum for the dissemination of original research contributions as well
as contributions related to practical system design, implementation, and
evaluation. The conference will also feature panel sessions, tutorials,
exhibits, demonstrations and a significant industrial track highlighting
DBMS research and technology. Additional 1998 SIGMOD/PODS information
may be obtained at http://www.boeing.com/sigmod98/

Topics of Interest

The major topics of interest include but are not limited to:

Active Databases
Access Methods and Data Structures
Authorization and DB Security
Constraint and Rule Management
Data Models
Database Design
Database Mining and OLAP
Database Performance, Benchmarks and Tuning Techniques
Database Programming Languages
Distributed Database Systems
Engineering and Scientific Database Systems
Extensible Database Systems
Heterogeneous Database Systems
Imprecise and Uncertain Information
Information Retrieval and Database
Legacy Databases
Logic and Databases
Mobile Computing and Database
Multimedia Database Systems
Object-Oriented Database Systems
Parallel Database Systems
Query Languages
Query Processing and Optimization
Real-Time Database Systems
Spatial and Temporal Database Systems
Tertiary Storage for Database Data
User and Application Interfaces
Workflow and Databases
World-Wide Web and Databases

We strongly encourage submission of papers and participation from the
entire international community of database researchers and
practitioners. We also strongly encourage submission of papers that
propose new approaches to topical areas for which current solutions are
deemed inappropriate. Such papers, while perhaps not as fully developed,
can nonetheless provide new technical directions to the field.

Submission Guidelines:

All submissions (including technical papers, panels, demos, tutorials
and industrial submissions) must be received by November 03, 1997.
Submissions should be sent to the program chair:

Laura M. Haas

e-mail: sigmod98@almaden.ibm.com
phone: 408-927-1722 fax: 408-927-3215

Research Papers

Please submit six copies of an original manuscript to the program chair.
All submissions should be less than 25 pages, double-spaced, in no
smaller than 10 point font (and with normal margins). The address,
telephone number, FAX number, and electronic address of the contact
author should be given on the title page of the submission. In addition,
you must submit to the program chair by electronic mail a PLAIN ASCII
file (no postscript, no LaTex) containing the title of the paper, the

forms, and one author of each accepted paper will be expected to present
the paper at the conference. Proceedings will be distributed at the
conference, and will be subsequently available for purchase through the
ACM. For current and detailed submission instructions please follow
directions in
http://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/sigmod98/sigmodcfp.html#research

SIGMOD Industrial Track

Plans for the conference include a continued emphasis on the SIGMOD
industrial program. To this end, SIGMOD solicits submissions focusing
on industrial experience with databases, database systems, and other
data-related technologies. Solicited topics include technical
innovations in commercial database products, as well as novel
application of databases or database technology in industrial settings.
Actual case studies from practitioners emphasizing applications,
database technology, system deployment, organizational ramifications, or
business impact are especially welcomed. Submissions should take the
form of an extended abstract (2 pages maximum) and should be sent to the
program chair by the regular paper deadline. These submissions will be
forwarded to the Industrial Track Co-Chairs and evaluated by the
Industrial Committee. Authors of accepted submissions will be invited
to speak in the Industrial Track of the conference and to have their
extended abstract (or an expanded version) included in the SIGMOD
conference proceedings. For current and detailed submission instructions
please follow directions in
http://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/sigmod98/sigmodcfp.html#industrial

Demonstration and Exhibits Program

SIGMOD'98 will feature demonstrations of software prototypes from
universities and research laboratories related to database management
systems research and practice. To submit a proposal, please send
project/system description of up to 5 pages to the program chair by the
regular paper deadline. Submissions will be forwarded to the
Demonstrations Chair for evaluation. Descriptions of accepted
demonstrations will appear in the proceedings. In addition, publishers
are invited to exhibit books and related journals. For current and
detailed submission instructions please follow directions in
http://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/sigmod98/sigmodcfp.html#demos

Tutorial and Panel Program

There will be a series of 1.5 hour tutorial and panel sessions focused
on issues relevant to researchers and/or practitioners of DBMS
technology. Each panel or tutorial proposal should include a one-page
description of the subject matter, the name of the organizer, and for
panels, a list of proposed panelists. Descriptions of accepted
submissions will appear in the proceedings. Submissions should be
addressed to the program chair who will forward them to the appropriate
chair for evaluation. For current and detailed submission instructions
