Position Available
------------------

Brandenburg's Technical University at Cottbus, founded in 1991, sees
itself as a progressive center of high technology claiming to tread
new paths in research and teaching. The foundation concept is based
on the idea of cooperation between science, industry, and society.
The basic principle of scientific work in Cottbus is the
interdisciplinary correlation between learning and teaching.

Cottbus, with about 120000 inhabitants, is the center of Lower
Lusitia. It is one of Germany's greenest towns with a chain of parks
stretching through the whole city. Cottbus is also close to the
Spreewald national park, which is one of the most famous natural parks
in Germany, home of a seldom variety of flora and fauna as well as a
characteristic culture.

The databases and information systems research group, chaired by
Prof. Dr. B. Thalheim, is seeking applicants for the position of a

scientific staff member m/f
("Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in")

for research and teaching. The position is full-time, compensation is
BAT IIa-O (which is approx. DM 60000 p.a. depending on age and family
status). Duration is limited up to four years with possible extension
of another year. The position offers the opportunity to prepare a
Ph.D. dissertation.

Your duties do particularly include participation in current research
projects on the field of information services. Teaching will
primarily focus on the support of courses in databases and related
fields for (small) computer science classes.

Candidates must have completed a Masters degree (Diplom) in computer
science, mathematics, or a related field with above average results at
a German university or a recognized international scientific
institution.

Besides a solid background in discrete mathematics, we expect profound
knowledge in theory and application of database systems and methods of
AI. Experience in information retrieval and management information
systems is an advantage.

The university intends to increase the number of female scientific
staff and particularly invites qualified women to apply. Disabled
applicants will get preference if equally qualified.

Please send your complete applications until October 31, 1997, to
