CALL FOR PAPERS
for
RIDE'98

Eighth International Workshop on Research Issues in Data Engineering:
Continuous-Media Databases and Applications

February 23-24, 1998
Adam's Mark Hotel, Orlando, Florida

Sponsored by
IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Data Engineering
(pending approval)

SCOPE
-----
This is the eighth in a series of annual workshops held in connection
with the IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering. RIDE'98
will bring together researches, developers and users working on issues
related to continuous-media databases and applications. Recent advances
in audio and video acquisition, processing, storage, and display
technologies have made the use of audio and video data more affordable,
practical, and widespread. Effective and efficient ways of organizing
audio and video data is needed to enable fast search of the databases.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
------------------
We solicit papers that deal with design and implementation issues
enabling the support of continuous-media databases and applications,
including storage, transmission and presentation of continuous-media data
and their applications. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:

* Data modeling
* Quality of service specification
* Storage and resource management
* Synchronization specification and enforcement
* Transmission protocols
* Query formulation, processing and localization
* Indexing, search and browsing
* Content-based retrieval
* Query evaluation
* system architectures and implementation experiences
* Video-on-demand systems
* Applications in education
* Applications in entertainment

We specially solicit papers from the industry describing ongoing projects
novel ideas, products, applications and experience gained. We plan on
multiple industry sessions during the workshop.
