ADVANCED VISUAL INTERFACES
International Working Conference

SCOPE

This Conference has the aim of bringing together experts in different areas
of computer science who have a common interest in the design and management
of visual interfaces. This Conference is the fourth of a series initiated
with AVI'92 in Rome, and continued with AVI'94 in Bari, and AVI'96 in
Gubbio. Both formal methods and concrete applications well fit into the
framework of the conference, with a particular focus on the areas of
information visualization, graphical and pictorial communication tools,
virtual reality applications, multimedia environments, WWW interfaces,
visual languages, adaptive interfaces, and other recent technological
developments. Cognitive science and metaphor analysis are also relevant,
since they are extremely useful for understanding the basic mechanisms
which allow visual interfaces to be easy to learn and use. As in the
previous editions, the program will comprise invited talks, given by
leaders in the field, including: Rex Hartson (Virginia Tech, USA), Wendy
Mackay (Univ Paris-Sud, France), and Moshe Zloof (Hewlett-Packard Labs,
USA).

PAPER SUBMISSION

We strongly encourage submissions that address research and development on
the above and other related topics, or that propose new approaches suitable
for fulfilling the demands that characterize advanced interfaces of the
next generation. Please submit six copies of an 8000 word original
manuscript to:

AVI' 98, Universita' di Roma "La Sapienza", Dipartimento di Scienze
dell'Informazione, Via Salaria 113, 00198 Roma, Italy. Tel. +39-6-8841962
Fax +39-6-8419188

Electronic submission will also be available. Detailed information on
electronic submission can be found under
http://www.ing.univaq.it/avi98/Submission/

Authors intending to submit a paper MUST send an electronic abstract of no
more than 250 words by filling in the abstract submission form that can be
found under http://www.ing.univaq.it/avi98/Abstracts/

Contributors with no access to the World Wide Web please contact

PANEL, TUTORIAL, AND WORKSHOP PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

Panels - The aim of panels is to stimulate the discussion, so they should
address exciting, hot, and controversial topics rather than being short
paper sessions. The panel proposal should include a 1000 word abstract,
which illustrates the panel topic, stating compelling issues to be debated,
and a list of all panel members.

Tutorials - Tutorials provide conference participants with the opportunity
to gain new insights in the area of advanced visual interfaces. The up to
two page tutorial proposal should clearly state the content, organization,
and target audience of the tutorial. A/V requirements and a biosketch of
the presenter(s) should also be provided.

Workshops - The objective of the pre-AVI workshops is to focus on special
topics of major importance. The up to 1000 word proposal should state the
objective and significance of the workshop, potential participants, format
and duration of the workshop.

Panel, tutorial, and workshop proposals should be sent to:

Tiziana Catarci
Universita' di Roma "La Sapienza", Dipartimento di Informatica
e Sistemistica, Via Salaria 113, 00198 Roma, Italy.
Tel./Fax +39-6-49918331 e-mail: catarci@infokit.dis.uniroma1.it or
tic@cs.brown.edu

Proposals may also be sent via e-mail only in a PLAIN TEXT format.

DEMO PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

The Exhibit Program will primarily consist of demonstrations of software
prototypes. The demo proposal should include a detailed project/system
description of up to 3000 words (specifying hw/sw requirements). A full
working version of accepted prototypes must be available for installation
by April 30, 1998.

Demo proposals should be submitted in four copies to:

Giuseppe Santucci
Universita' di Roma "La Sapienza", Dipartimento di
Informatica e Sistemistica, Via Salaria 113, 00198 Roma, Italy.
