The Research Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing (FAW) seeks a
motivated researcher in the field of digital libraries.=20

The Project
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
The project will be funded by the German Research Association (DFG)
and has the title "Design and Realization of a Virtual Personnel
Library for Dynamic Documents in Technical Areas". We are searching
for a researcher who is interested in working in the subproject which
deals with dynamic documents. A dynamic document (or maybe better a
virtual document) is a document which actually does not exist but can
be computed on demand using data from databases etc. Research
questions are for example: What are the characteristics of virtual
documents? What metadata do you need to describe virtual documents?
How do you build a catalog which catalogs such "virtual documents"?
Versioning of documents plays also an important role.

The Candidate's Profile
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
The candidate should match the following profile:
1) Master degree or better Ph.D. in computer science, information
science or a related field

2) Experience in at least two of the following research areas:
- digital libraries
- hypermedia=20
- environmental information systems
- Internet/Intranet and World Wide Web=20
- knowledge management and information management

3) Experience in designing and implementing software systems

4) Interested in working together with other young and motivated
researchers in a research project

If the candidate has good English skills, it is not primarily required
that he/she speaks German. The position can be filled as soon as
possible and will be limited for 2 years. According to the rules of
the German Research Association the salary will be half of BAT IIa for
candidates without Ph.D. and full BAT IIa for candidates with a Ph.D.

The exact amount of a full BAT IIa salary depends on age and marital
status of the applicant. For an unmarried scientist (about 30 years old)
the salary will be somewhere between 70000 and 75000 DM per annum.

FAW
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
With the founding of the Research Institute for Applied Knowledge
Processing (FAW) in October 1987, Germany's first self-supporting
Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI) was established in Ulm. Its
main goals are result-oriented research, practical applications, and
knowledge transfer. Established as a public foundation, the FAW today
is sponsored by the State of Baden-W=FCrttemberg and the companies
Daimler-Benz AG, Digital Equipment GmbH, Hewlett-Packard GmbH, IBM
Deutschland GmbH, Robert Bosch GmbH, Siemens-Nixdorf
Informationssysteme AG and the str=E4ssle Informationssysteme GmbH.
Research contracts enable the institute to be 70 % self-supporting.
The remaining 30 % of financing comes from basic funding by the
sponsors. The core idea of the FAW is to bring companies together with
potential users and customers in order to engage in precompetitive
research or in contracted projects. By focusing on the interaction of
state, industry, and science, the FAW sets an interesting example of
effective cooperation in the high-tech area. The leitmotif of FAW=B4s
work is the design of intelligent systems that deal with complexity.
Solutions are formulated by integrating contributions from different
scientific disciplines and paradigms. Conceived as an answer to
comparative research initiatives in the United States and Japan, FAW
today has developed a particular method of focusing
application-oriented research and knowledge transfer in new and
promising fields. For further information please visit

Ulm/Neu-Ulm
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
As a visitor, you are completely unaware of the fact that Ulm is in
the State of Baden-W=FCrttemberg and Neu-Ulm is in Bayern (Bavaria).
Between them flows the Danube, whose bridges link the two towns
together. Of course, the two towns function as independent
municipalities. But, together, with 170.000 inhabitants, they
represent the cultural and economic heart of an extensive region of
east Baden-W=FCrttemberg and west Swabia. Ulm/Neu-Ulm is located in
between Munich and Stuttgart in south of Germany (1 hour in each
direction). The ICE-train connects it very well to other places in
Germany. To go to the Alps for hiking takes you 1,5 hours. Another
hour and you are in Italy which is a completely different world. There
is no shortage of very nice restaurants in Ulm/Neu-Ulm. Living costs
are rather inexpensive. For more information visit
