The Earth Observation Data Systems Project collaborates with industry
partners in researching the next generation of distributed information
systems for Earth Observation data processing and delivery. The
platform
for this research and development includes on- and near-line mass
storage
systems, distributed systems, high performance computing and broadband
networks.

We are seeking an experienced Research Leader to take responsibility for
the on-demand generation and delivery of data products and services
using
the Internet.

You will need a PhD in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent
experience in a relevant discipline, and a significant record of
achievement as a researcher in a relevant area. The ability to provide
hands-on research leadership to a small team is essential. You will also
need to liaise closely with industry and research collaborators in
Australia and overseas to determine directions, to assess the relevance
of
advances in allied topics, to propose activities and to lead the
implementation of prototype systems.

DUTY NO. DESCRIPTION

* Duties numbered in order of importance
1. Provide research leadership to the Earth Observation Data Systems
Project.=20
2. Perform research, development and industry interaction on problems
and
application-focussed prototypes aligned within the scope of the Earth
Observation Data Systems Project. The following areas are of particular
interest to the Project:
Earth Observation Distributed User Services
Image Processing
Distributed Systems
Management of Very Large Data Repositories

2. Carry out industry consultation within the scope of the Project
and of
the Division.
3. Conduct research of international standing within the scope of
the=
Project.
4. Collaborate with related research and industry groups on R&D
projects,
particularly those with industrial benefit.
5. Contribute to the development of CSIRO through CSIRO
Mathematical and
Information Sciences.
6. Other duties as directed.

SELECTION CRITERIA

PRE-REQUISITE
PhD or equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant discipline.

in Earth Observation data systems.
2. Application of Knowledge
Demonstrated application of research skills in the area of database
and/or
information systems involving one or desirably more of:
Earth Observation data processing
distributed systems
systems architecture, analysis and performance
management of large data stores.
3. Problem Solving
Capacity to undertake problem analysis and to design solutions meeting
user
requirements. Specific experience in the approaches and practice of
solving
problems using the following: UNIX-based graphic work station
environments
Inter/Intranet systems.
4. Resource Management
Capacity to provide leadership to a small research and development team.
Extensive experience in project management processes, and in the
development and management of R&D projects.
DESIRABLE
5. Judgement
Capacity to identify and pursue opportunities for research and
development
in the program and more generally for the Division and the Organisation.
6.Adaptability
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and to respond productively to
changing requirements.

Ability to interact with research and industry partners.
