FORWISS (Bavarian Research Centre for Knowledge-Based Systems)
Website: http://www.forwiss.tu-muenchen.de/wibas.html
Job Title: research assistant
Location: Munich, Germany
Job Type: full-time salaried, temporary, research, no teaching

=======================================

FORWISS (Bavarian Research Centre for Knowledge-based Systems) performs
applied and basic research in seven research groups with a strong focus
on industrial application. The core research fields of the Knowledge
Bases Research Group are online databases, data warehouses, and multi-
dimensional databases. In the last area, the European Community
sponsored project RasDaMan is located where a domain-independent DBMS
for multidimensional discrete data, i.e., arrays of arbitrary size,
dimensionality, and base type is being developed. Among the pivotal
application fields are geo information systems, medical/biological
image management, and data warehousing/OLAP. For this DBMS, multi-
dimensional compression techniques have to be developed in the
position open now.

We are seeking an excellent candidate with a knowledge combination of
data compression, C++ software development (Unix / WindowsNT) and data-
base systems and with a high commitment to leading-edge research and
communication with our interdisciplinary user group. Imaging / signal
processing specialists are welcome if prepared to acquire the necessary
database knowledge.

If the candidate holds a university diploma or M.Sc. in CS/EE complying
with German regulations, PhD preparation is possible. PhD theses can be
written in English, and most related publications are expected to be in
English as well. No teaching will be required. The contract will run
until the end of 1998, a prolongation will depend possible and subject
to funding availability. Annual salary is about 70,000 DM (BAT IIa) with
about 26 holidays per year.

The Knowledge Bases group is located in Munich in the South of Bavaria,
a city with excellent leisure facilities ranging from mountaneering to
culturural activities. Next to FORWISS, some nice cocktail bars and
beergardens are situated - we will be happy to be invited!

Although the intention is to fill the position as soon as possible, the
opening will remain active until a suitable candidate is found. Advance
fax or email submission of applications is possible if original letter
follows. Please send application letters to the following address,
clearly marked with "RasDaMan application" on the outside:
