International Database Engineering and Applications Symposium
IDEAS97: Call for Participation
-------------------------------

=====================================================================
IDEAS
=====================================================================
The aim of this series of symposiums is to address the engineering and
application aspects of databases. This is in response to the increasing
demands placed on related theories and technologies resulting from the
widening scope of database solutions within all forms of enterprise. In
particular, we wish to focus on the engineering of database deployment
which exploit theories and technologies from complementary areas, such as
information retrieval, multi- and hyper-media, human interfaces to
databases, HCI and communications.

Accordingly, these symposiums are structured to address current issues,
relating to advanced applications, interfaces to databases, database
engineering, and advanced data management theory and technology.

IDEAS97 Symposium Location: Concordia University, Montreal
========================================================================

Concordia University is located in the center of Montreal. It has been in
existence since 1974. However, Loyola of Montrial and Sir George
Williams University, the two institutions which came together to found it,
have a considerably longer history. The name of the University reflects its
place within the community; it is drawn from the motto of the City of
Montrial, "Concordia Salus". For details, please visit:

http://www.concordia.ca/Visitor_Centre/History/History-Concordia.html

Travelling to Montrial and Concordia

AIR: Flights from Canada and the United States come into Dorval Airport, 22
km. west of downtown Montrial. All other international airlines land at
Mirabel Airport which is 55 km. north of the city. Both airports offer
AEROCAR bus service to downtown Montrial. Upon arrival at the AEROCAR
terminus either take a taxi or walk the few blocks to most of the downtown
hotels and the downtown campus of Concordia University.

BUS/SUBWAY: The Berri-UQAM station is the final destination for all bus
lines into the city. Upon arrival you may either take a taxi or utilise the
Metro (subway) which is located below the bus station. Travel in the
"Angrignon" direction (green line) and exit at the Guy/Concordia stop for
Concordia University.

TRAIN: Travelling to Montrial by train will bring you to Central
Station. It is just a few blocks from Concordia, so you may either walk or
take a short taxi ride.

CAR: Driving into Montrial

From the East or South (Highway 10, 15 or 20) Take the Decarie
expressway to Sherbrooke Street, Exit 64.
From the North or West (Highway 15, 20 or 40) Take the Decarie
expressway to Sherbrooke Street, Exit 64.

Sir George Williams Campus

To get to Sir George Williams Campus from Exit 64, drive east on
Sherbrooke St. for 3.5 km and turn right onto Mackay St. Metered parking is
available in the downtown core. There is a public parking lot in the
J.W. McConnell Building. The entrance is on Mackay Street.

Loyola Campus

To get to Loyola Campus from Exit 64, drive west on Sherbrooke St. for
2.7 km. You may find parking on the street or use the University Visitors
Parking lot.

Please contact your local travel agent regarding visas and passport
requirements.

Some facts about Montreal:
- largest French speaking city outside of France with a dynamic
anglophone and ethnic presence. Though you would have no
problem getting by in English, you may want to try out your
French
- population of greater Montreal area: 3.5 million.
- currency: Canadian dollar.
- is in the Eastern time zone, five hours behind Greenwich Mean
Time
- Daylight saving time is in effect between end of April to end of
October.
- average temperature in August 58-77 F/14-25 C;

Sales Taxes: There is a federal tax (GST) of 7% on most goods and services.
and a provincial tax of 6.5% (PST) on top of this! Visitors can get a
refund on both of these taxes for items such as: accommodations used for
less than one month and to goods purchased for use outside Canada. It does
not apply to most goods and services used while in Canada. You may pick up
a GST Rebate for Visitors form at the airport, hotels, border crossings or
visitor centers. Save original sales receipts and apply for your tax refund
at duty-free shops at airports and most border crossings, or you can apply
for and receive it by mail.

Emergency Numbers Dial 911 for police, fire, ambulance.
