Multimedia Databases in Perspective
-----------------------------------

Edited by: P.M.G. Apers, H.M. Blanken, and M.A.W. Houtsma
ISBN: 3-540-76109-8
Publisher: Springer-Verlag London
373 pp. Paperback

Databases play a vital role in the development of multimedia
applications by offering high-level, concurrent access to large amounts
of multimedia data. This volume provides much-needed coverage of the
technical background to the development of multimedia applications by
assessing the full range of requirements imposed on database systems by
the multimedia applications they support. In-depth coverage is also
given to supporting technologies, such as operating systems and
networks, and to critical success factors in the use of multimedia
applications.

Among the topics covered are:
7 a survey of current and emerging multimedia applications and the
implications for database systems;
7 user interaction with systems managing graphics, voice, sound,
and/or video;
7 searching hypermedia data stored on distributed servers;
7 standards for manipulating and describing multimedia data: SQL3
and SGML/HyTime;
7 content-based querying of multimedia data and query processing;
7 indexing of multimedia data.

Multimedia Databases in Perspective will be of interest to final year
undergraduate students, MSc and PhD students studying databases,
database management, information systems and multimedia applications.
It will also provide invaluable reading material for researchers and
DBMS developers working in industry.
