Following the previous meetings in Budapest, Hungary (1993), Santa
Margherita Ligure, Italy (1994), Kanagawa, Japan (1995), and Bonn, Germany
(1996), this Fifth ICLP-workshop on Deductive Databases and Logic
Programming DDLP'97 will be held in Leuven, Belgium.
The meeting will be run as a post-conference workshop of the 1997
International Conference on Logic Programming, which will be held on July
8-12, 1997.

The integration of deductive databases and logic programming leads to
intelligent information systems. Techniques from deductive databases must
be used for achieving efficient retrieval and reasoning in large knowledge
bases, or databases which are distributed over the Web. Logic programming
provides a powerful declarative language for accessing and maintaining
knowledge in databases. Recent results in logic programming, constraint
logic programming, program transformation and optimization, and
non-monotonic reasoning are useful for extending the expressive power and
the computational efficiency of deductive database systems.

Suggested topics for submissions include, but are not limited to:

* disjunctive deductive databases, uncertain information
* non-monotonic semantics
* query languages and optimization
* program transformations
* integration of heterogeneous knowledge
* execution and debugging models
* data mining
* management of semi-structured information
* querying the World-Wide-Web
* constraint databases
* object-oriented databases
* active databases, updates
* temporal databases

The workshop is planned to be one day, with presentations of half an hour.
A fundamental goal is to give opportunities for active discussions on new
research directions and the exchange of latest results.

IMPORTANT DATES

Submission deadline: April 28, 1997
Notification of acceptance: May 20, 1997
Camera ready version: June 16, 1997

SUBMISSIONS

The primary focus is on new and original research. But we also encourage the
submission of papers describing products, prototypes in development or
benchmarks.
Full papers or extended abstracts in English of 6 to 10 pages are welcome on
any aspects of deductive databases and new concepts of logic programming
supporting it. Authors are invited to send their papers to one of the
organizers until April 28, 1997. Submission in LaTeX or plain TeX format by
e-mail is encouraged.
Notification of acceptance will be no later than May 20, 1997.
The final, camera-ready versions of the accepted papers must be received by
June 16, 1997 to be included into the workshop proceedings.
