PROFESSOR OR READER IN
SOFTWARE SYSTEMS

We are looking for an established researcher to lead our research in
contemporary and future software systems. The most suitable candidates are
expected to be forward looking and have a strong research record in some
aspects of Software Systems Engineering already. Examples of these might be
the design, architecture, scaling, evolution or underlying principles of
software systems.

The Department currently has five principal research areas. These are: a)
Communications Systems, b) Networked Multimedia, c) Vision, Imaging and
Virtual Environments, d) Intelligent Systems and e) Information Systems. In
the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise the Department's research was rated 5.

The Information Systems Research Group currently has 6 academic members
whose interests include software systems design, object-oriented and
functional languages for parallel processing, inconsistency and default
logics, human computer interaction and database concurrency. About 25
research staff and students are associated with this group. There are
currently research collaborations with a number of other leading University
groups and companies which include Andersen Consulting, BT, Microsoft and
Hewlett Packard. Further details of the work of Group is attached and can
also be found at http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/isrg/. The successful applicant
for the Chair or Readership will be expected to lead and shape the
Information Systems Group. They will also be expected to play a part in the
Department's teaching activities. Currently, there is also a lectureship
vacancy in the software systems area.
