Introduction on GEN'97
----------------------
Global Engineering Networking (GEN) is an initiative supported by the =

European Commission in order to foster the use of networks to open up =

world-wide markets for users and suppliers of engineering products and =

services.
These networks have the goal of making engineering knowledge, solutions, =

methods and services available via data networks. In this way, it is =

intended that world-wide co-operation between engineers and providers of
engineering products and services should be improved, product innovation
fostered, and the efficiency of product development increased.
GEN allows firms to develop and offer products dynamically by quickly
placing, acquiring, exchanging and incorporating components and services
in response to rapidly changing markets and technologies. By GEN, the
Web
and intranets can be used more efficiently in order to:

- exploit internal corporate knowledge bases, inter-firm project team =

knowledge bases and external design information and services,
- enhance reuse of internal and external knowledge,
- concentrate on core competences by making maximum use of products =

and services available on world markets.

GEN'97 aims to introduce industrial decision makers to the present state =

of technology and to raise their awareness of the business benefits. =

GEN'97 will deliver a strategic vision and an incremental path to =

implement that vision.
GEN'97 aims to provide a forum for researchers by technical
presentations =

and discussions, to stimulate co-operation between different
initiatives
and to promote standardisation.
The GEN'97 exhibition room provides a place to demonstrate and market =

industrially implemented solutions, IT vendor frameworks and results =

from EU technology development projects. =
