Job Openings

The Exploratory Database Systems Department at the IBM Almaden
Research Center is looking for a few talented individuals to work on
projects including data and knowledge mining, OLAP, heterogeneous
middleware for information integration, databases and the web,
object-oriented query processing, object-relational database systems,
and advanced transaction management. The ideal candidate would have a
Masters or PhD in Computer Science, a solid background in database
technology, and a strong desire to implement her/his ideas in real
systems. Desirable expertise would include knowledge of some or all of
the following: C++, Java, NT, Unix, Lotus Notes, SQL, and experience
working with one or more commercially-available database
systems. Salaries are competitive, based on experience, and positions
carry full IBM benefits. IBM is an Equal Opportunity employer; women
and minorities are encouraged to apply. To apply, please e-mail an
ASCII or postscript resume to Debbie Sandman
(sandman@almaden.ibm.com).

Research on database at the IBM Almaden Research Center covers a broad
range of topics. Our goals are to enable increased performance both
for transaction processing and for complex, ad hoc queries, and to
raise the level of abstraction provided by database systems, enabling
databases to serve a broader range of applications. We are addressing
the first with work on advanced database algorithms, including
algorithms for data mining and OLAP, query optimization, and high
performance parallel architectures. For the second we are exploring
object-relational extensions, middleware for connecting to diverse
data sources, support for workflow and advanced transactions, and
support for time series and other interesting data types.

Our work ranges from pure exploratory to applied research. We are
collaborating with IBM product development laboratories in a joint
effort, the Database Technology Institute, which was established to
promote the invention of database technologies and their rapid use in
products and to carry out large scale database experimentation. The
institute, located in our research center, brings together researchers
and product developers to work on topics of mutual interest.
