WELCOME TO AIME'97

The AIME'97 Conference is organized by the European Society for Artificia=
l
Intelligence in Medicine, and is the sixth in the Society's series of
international biennial conferences.

The AIME'97 team, consisting of the Organizing Committee and the Programm=
e
Committee, has endeavoured to provide unique educational and sharing
opportunities in respect to the international state-of-the-art of
Artificial Intelligenge in Medicine (AIM) from a research and application
perspective.

Each day of the conference will include an invited lecture in an area of
interest for participants. At the end of the Conference, the programme wi=
ll
offer a round table discussion focusing on current strategic issues for t=
he
AIM Community.

The Scientific Programme includes 56 presentations (33 papers and 23
posters) covering the following broad subject categories:
- Protocols & Guidelines
- Knowledge Acquisition & Learning
- Decision-Support Theories
- Diagnostic Problem Solving
- Probabilistic Models & Fuzzy Logic
- Temporal Reasoning & Planning
- Natural Language & Terminology
- Image & Signal Processing
- Hybrid & Cooperative Systems
and other areas relevant to AIM.

As already announced the authors of the best papers will be invited to
submit revised and extended versions of their papers to be considered for
publication in a special issue of the AIM journal. These invitations will
be sent after the Conference.

Special attention has been given to the presentation of posters, which ha=
ve
been allocated two plenary sessions, with time for oral presentation. Ali=
ve
demonstrations will also be made possible. Finally, a set of tutorials ar=
e
organized as the first activity at the Conference on March 23rd. The
Programme Committee thanks all the contributors to the Conference for
making it possible to present such a scientifically outstanding programme.
