We are pleased to inform you that the final call for papers (including
list of PC members)

for the DS-7 Conference is now available on the web at URL

http://diwww.epfl.ch/w3lbd/conferences/cfpds7/cfpds7.html

Thanks to a rearrangement with the publisher, we have been able to fix
a new deadline=20

for paper submission, which leaves you 67 days from today on to prepare
your submission.

New deadline for submission: April 20, 1997

FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

7th IFIP 2.6 Working Conference on Database Semantics (DS-7)

SEARCHING FOR SEMANTICS: DATA MINING, REVERSE ENGINEERING, ETC.

October 7-10, 1997

Leysin,Switzerland

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

At the beginning there were no databases. Information was stored in
archives

which contained mere data, whose semantic interpretation was left up to
the

application programs. Then databases were invented to get rid of

duplications and inconsistencies. Database design methodologies
instructed

people that they should first understand the semantics of the data
relevant

to the applications and then express this semantics into database
schemas.

The approach has been extremely successful, resulting in myriads of

databases being installed in almost every application environment.

Unfortunately, many database design processes neglect to properly
record the

initial specifications, i.e. most of the intended semantics is not
available

anymore.

Today's database designers are committed to the reuse of existing data,
for

performance and economic reasons. Moreover, they often have to
complement

enterprise data with data from external sources, where the
corresponding

semantics is rarely fully available. Accessing data via the Web is just
an

example of input from external autonomous repositories.

Database researchers today are facing the issues involved in the
discovery

and understanding of the semantics hidden in whatever is available:
data

sets, data stores formats, database schemas, application programs,

documentation, metadata, forms, interviews, etc. This seventh in the
series

of IFIP 2.6 working conferences devoted to database semantics will
focus on

these issues. Submissions are solicited regarding theories,
principles,

models, methods, formalisms, experiences, tools and prototypes for

recovering, representing and organizing semantic information on
application

data from any possible source. This includes in particular the
processes

listed below.

TOPICS

- data mining and knowledge acquisition/discovery

- data reverse engineering

- extraction of semantic information from programs

- semantic elicitation and visualization

- putting semantics into context

- cooperative elaboration of semantics

- automatic indexing, classification and clustering

- languages and interfaces for data mining or reverse engineering

- advanced query models

- visual mining

- correspondence investigation in schema integration

- applications, experiences, tools, industrial trends

Authors are invited submit contributions that are directly relevant to
these

issues. Four copies of the submission (from 6000 to 8000 words, not

including abstract and references) should be sent at either one of the
PC

Chairs. The Chapman & Hall guidelines for preparation of IFIP
manuscripts

should preferably be followed (see Chapman&Hall LaTex macros).
Submissions

should indicate which of the proposed topics they address. Authors of

accepted papers will be asked to revise their contribution according
to

referees comments for inclusion in the pre-proceedings distributed at
the

conference. The final proceedings will be published in book format by

Chapman & Hall, after the conference. Authors will be asked, right
after the

conference, to prepare a final revision of their contribution taking
into

account the comments, questions and discussion raised by their
presentation

at the conference.

=46ORMAT

The IFIP 2.6 Database Semantics (DS) serie has established a tradition
of

highly appreciated working conferences, where quality of presentations
is

preferred to quantity. The DS-7 conference, following the tested format
of

the previous successful DS conferences, will be a four-day live-in
working

conference with limited attendance and extensive time for presentations
and

discussions.

A highlight of the event will be an INVITED TALK by one of the leading

figures in data mining, Prof. Jiawei Han, from the Simon Fraser
University,

British Columbia, Canada.

VENUE

The conference will take place at the **** Leysin Classic Hotel. A
very

pleasant location in the Swiss Alps at an altitude of app. 1000
meters.

Leysin offers magnificent views over the Alps and the Lake of Geneva.
In

October the wheather is usually fine and there are many hiking
opportunities

which will allow participants to profit from the scenery. Swimming pool
and

tennis courts are next door to the hotel, or you might try your luck

climbing or flying with a paraglider ... Well-known art exhibitions are
held

at the Fondation Gianadda, in Martigny, close to Leysin, which also
has

permanent collections of roman antiques, vintage cars and modern
sculpture.

Montreux, Lausanne and the world- famous Chateau de Chillon are a
short

driving distance from Leysin. Leysin is two hours by train from Geneva

Airport, or 140 km nearly all highway. It is also reachable within a
couple

of hours by train from the Z=FCrich airport.
