Second Call for Papers -- Reminder
16th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER'97)
Los Angeles, California, USA
3 - 6 November 1997

SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE
The international conceptual modeling conferences provide a forum for presenting
and discussing current research and interesting applications in which the major
emphasis is on conceptual modeling. These conferences were originally devoted
to the Entity-Relationship (ER) model, but have long since expanded to consider
all types of semantic data modeling, behavior and process modeling, and object-
oriented systems modeling. The conferences embrace all phases of software
development including analysis, specification, design, implementation,
evolution, and reengineering. Our particular desire for ER'97 is to provide
stimulating presentations and discussions on conceptual modeling that will
interest consultants and information systems professionals outside the computer
industry, as well as information technology academics and researchers in
computer-company laboratories.

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
Steering Committee Representatives: Stefano Spaccapietra (Chair)
Bernhard Thalheim (Vice Chair)
Peter Chen (ER'97 Liaison)
General Chair: Wesley Chu
Local Arrangements: Alfonso Cardenas
Registration Chair: Hua Yang

TOPICS OF INTEREST
Conceptual modeling for: information systems, decision-support systems, office-
information systems, information-retrieval systems, hypertext systems, informa-
tion superhighways, active databases, heterogeneous and federated databases,
business process modeling, knowledge bases, multimedia, user interfaces.
Conceptual modeling in information-system engineering: CASE tools, integrating
application models, rapid prototyping, database administration, database design,
maintenance and evolution, reverse engineering and reengineering, workflow
management. Theoretical foundations of conceptual modeling: extending modeling
concepts, semantics and constraints, query languages, integrating data and
behavior modeling, integrating different types of conceptual models. Other
related topics where conceptual modeling is the major theme.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Five copies of original papers, not exceeding 5,000 words (25 double-spaced
pages), should be submitted to one of the program co-chairs. In addition, a
cover page that includes paper title, author(s), and abstract should be
submitted by email. Papers on technology development should be sent to Embley,
and papers on technology application should be sent to Goldstein.

Los Angeles. ER'97 will be held at the UCLA Faculty Center, not far from the
Anderson Graduate School of management where Peter Chen organized the first ER
conference almost twenty years ago.
