Chair, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
University of Maryland Baltimore County

The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites
applications for the position of Chair of the Department of
Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Candidates
should have a strong research record, a commitment to
excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, and
demonstrated leadership skills. The candidate must be
qualified to be tenured at the level of full professor.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
consists of 26 full-time and 32 adjunct faculty with strong
research programs supported by grants from industry and
government agencies. The faculty's current research
concentrations include algorithms and computation theory,
computer networks and systems, database and knowledge
management, scientific computation, graphics and
visualization, communications and signal processing,
microelectronics, photonics and optical communications. The
Chair is expected to provide leadership in developing a new
computer engineering program drawing on the expertise from
within the Department, local industry and government
agencies. It is also desirable that the Chair complements
the Department's current research areas and needs.

The BS, MS, and PhD degree programs in the department have
approximately 750 undergraduate and 210 graduate students.
The Department enjoys considerable space, including a new
(1993) Engineering and Computer Science building, and an
excellent laboratory and computing environment. The UMBC's
main mission is in science, technology and public policy with
a campus of 10,400 students, which is located in the
Baltimore-Washington corridor, providing easy access to both
metropolitan areas and the numerous federal agencies,
industrial research centers, and consulting firms. UMBC's
funding of grants, awards and sponsored research total $36
million.

Computer Science and Electrical Engineering University of Maryland Baltimore County The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering of the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for two faculty positions. The first position is in the area of Computer Engineering at the rank of Associate Professor or tenure-track Assistant Professor. The second position is for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the areas of computer systems, architecture, networks or graphics. Candidates are expected to establish a funded research program and should be able to teach in one or more related areas, such as computer architecture, programming languages, software engineering or operating systems. Applicants must have or be about to receive a PhD in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or a related discipline.

The department consists of 26 full-time and 32 adjunct faculty. The faculty's research programs are supported by grants from industry and government agencies with new grants totaling more than $3.2M in FY96. The BS, MS, and PhD degree programs in the department have approximately 750 undergraduate and 210 graduate students. The UMBC campus has 10,400 students and is located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, providing easy access to both metropolitan areas and to numerous federal agencies, industrial research centers and consulting firms.

The department is located in a new (1993) Engineering and Computer Science building which has excellent computing and laboratory environments, including an ATM testbed for research on high speed networking and multimedia communications. In addition the department has semiconductor processing and photonic research laboratories in the Technology Research Center. The department's computing facilities include Sun and Silicon Graphics workstations, SGI Crimson and SPARC servers, and high performance graphics workstations. The University Computing Services has over 400 workstations for general student use and several high-end machines, including 2 Silicon Graphics Challenge XL 20-processor systems and a Cray Y-MP EL. The university's Imaging Research Center also provides high-end graphics support, including production quality input/output devices and production software.
