Call for Papers
Special Issue of The Journal of Systems and Software
on
Real-time Active Databases : Theory and Practice
Tentative Publication Date : July 1998

The areas of real-time databases and active databases have received
tremendous attention in the last few years. Real-time database systems provide
issues for the processing of time-constrained transactions in time-critical
applications, whereas active database systems provide rules for triggering
transactions to monitor and react to changes in the external environment in
a timely manner. Although the applications of real-time databases and active
databases have similar characteristics, their research has proceeded separately.
In recent years, there is a strong move toward integrating these two new
technologies. However, the integration is not trivial. A lot of design issues
have to be reconsidered and solved. The purpose of this special issue is to
report new research results on this newly emerging area, real-time active
databases.
The special issue will focus on (but is not limited to) the following
topics and issues in the context of the design and development of real-time
active database systems :

- scheduling of time-constrained triggered transactions
- deadline and priority assignment
- concurrency control and recovery
- modelling of real-time active transactions
- coupling modes for triggering time-constrained transactions
- rules specification and evaluation
- system architecture
- commitment of transactions
- replicated data management
- prototyping of real-time active database systems
- applications and tools

Papers should be on the border between theory and practice, reporting
findings with practical implications. They should contain some sort of
practical evaluation of their findings, through either experimentation,
simulation, analysis, and/or experience. Please submit six copies of
your manuscript to the guest editor by 31 July 1997:
