Universitetslektor i datavetenskap med inriktning mot datalogi,
Dnr 3152-2313-96

Starting date for both of the positions is July 1, 1997.

The position "Universitetslektor i datavetenskap" is equivalent to
"Associate Professor in Computing Science" and "Universitetslektor i
datavetenskap med inriktning mot datalogi" is equivalent to "Associate
Professor in Computing Science with focus on Computer Science".
"Dnr" is our registration number.

You can apply for one of the positions, or for both of them, since
they are close in their definitions.

For the "Associate Professor in Computing Science with focus on Computer
Science" we seek applicants with competence in one or several of the
following areas (listed in alphabetical order):

- Applied artificial intelligence
- Applied human-computer interaction
- Computer networks and distributed systems

More details on the announcement and on how to apply are given below.

Some background
=================

Our university is young, founded around 1965, has around 20.000 students.
We have faculties for natural sciences, arts, social sciences, dentistry and
medicine, and a broad teacher training programme.
The University Hospital of Northern Sweden is within the campus
area. Health care and the university are the main employers in Umea, that
has around 100.000 inhabitants.

Institutionen for Datavetenskap" is the Swedish name of our department. We
are within natural sciences, and our department has around 50 employees.
"Datavetenskap" is a name used at several similar departments in Sweden,
and stands for Computer Science in general. Some departments, like ours
prefer Computing Science, to cover the combination of Numerical Analysis
with Computer Science. Historically, several departments in Sweden derive
from mathematics and applied mathematics, and therefore e.g. electrical
engineering is not so strongly included in Computing Science.

We have three chairs. The first chair was in "numerical analysis" (Per-Ake
Wedin), followed by a chair in "Numerical analysis with parallel computing"
(Bo Kagstrom, present chairman of the department), and the latest one is in
"computer science" (Patrik Eklund), which was installed in 1995.

Our main research directions are currently Computational Intelligence,
Human-Computer Interaction, Parallel Computing, Scientific Computing and
Software Engineering. We are also engaged in undergraduate education in
several study programmes.

The application, general information
====================================

In your application, clearly state which position(s) you apply for
(use Swedish name and include the Dnr number).

Send application to:

Umea universitet
Registrator
S-901 87 Umea
Sweden

Applications must be received on or before February 3, 1997.

For each position you apply for, include 2 complete and identical copies of
your application, and all enclosures.
The university applies individual salaries, and applicants are asked
to include a proposal for salary.

The application, specific information
=====================================
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Responsibilities include
undergraduate teaching (mainly on the study programmes in Computing Science,
and Computing Science and Engineering), and research. We intend to offer
50% research during the academic year 1997/98. Applicants should preferably
have a reading knowledge of the swedish language.

Your application should include

- curriculum vitae including certified copies of attached documents
- statement of scientific activitities, including
summary of scientific field in which applicant is active
scientific papers, or a selection thereof
R&D activities, cooperations with industry, etc.
others
- statement of educational activities, including
1) list of courses which applicant has given (specify activity)
2) educational training
3) developments and research within education
4) education material developed
5) experience in planning and administration of education
6) research information
7) others

Note that it is important to demonstrate educational competence in parallel
with research competence. In evaluating applicants, equal weight is given
to scientific and educational competence. It is usually difficult to
motivate acceptance of a postdoc without further research merits even if
the educational side is well improved. Similarly, it is difficult to accept
a highly competent researcher without any educational experience.

For more information, contact Bo Kagstrom (email bokg@cs.umu.se), Patrik
Eklund (e-mail peklund@cs.umu.se) or Lennart Edblom (director of
studies, for questions related to undergraduate education,
