The University of Twente in the Netherlands is starting a new research
project on parallel database systems.
In the project, named IMPACT, we have room for a RESEARCHER.

There are two options for this position:

* someone who has an MSc. He/she could be employed as a researcher
for three years and his/her position could afterwards be extended
with two more years to complete a PhD-thesis. The salary for this
position is +/- $30,000 per year.

* a PostDoc position for three years paying +/- $40,000 per year.

An full description of the position is included below.

IMPACT is a new research project in the Netherlands in which parallel
database systems are studied in the practical context of a banking
application. In the project, the University of Twente cooperates with the
ING-bank, which is a major bank in the Netherlands.
Other Dutch Universities work in the same project on related subjects,
like e.g. data mining.

The subject studied by the University of Twente covers parallelism for
typical the banking application, which consists of
OLTP and large, statistical decision support queries.
The bank wants to run OLTP at a highest possible throughput
and concurrently run DSS queries on a transaction consistent version of the
database. Currently the bank runs Parallel Oracle on various hardware
platforms and the performance is not sufficient.

The University of Twente will exploit the experience in parallel database
systems obtained from the PRISMA project. In that project, a parallel,
relational, main memory DBMS was built and a lot of experience was gained
in the area of parallel processing of complex queries. In the IMPACT
project, we will try to make the PRISMA experience practical.

In the IMPACT project we are looking for a researcher, who could be
a PhD-student or a PostDoc. The person we are looking for
* is a good and practical computer scientist.
* has very good programming skills.
* is willing to work as both a researcher and a programmer.
* has practical knowledge of computer systems, preferably, but not
necessarily of parallelism and database systems.
* is willing to work in a team.
* is willing to live in the Netherlands for a few years.
* is an MSc or a graduate in a relevant major.

We offer either of the following:

A research position for 3 years for an MSc, possibly followed by 2
additional years to complete a PhD-thesis. The salary for this position
is +/- $30,000 per year.

A research position for 3 years for a graduate. The salary for this position
is +/- $40,000 per year.

Applicants are asked to send a letter of application and resume to
