The Storage Systems Department at Almaden Research
and IBM's Storage Systems Division (SSD) in San Jose have recently
formed the Storage Systems Institute (SSI),
whose goal is to explore
new technologies in storage systems and software, and facilitate the
rapid exploitation by IBM of these technologies in products and services.
The newly created SSI will rapidly grow and expand in 1997, and we
expect to sustain 3 to 6 experimental systems projects.
Our goal is to be the premier institution in the world for research
and development of storage systems. We are actively looking for
people who want to be part of an exciting opportunity to develop the new
storage systems of the future and who want to work in an exciting and
innovative culture.
For Research Scientists, we are looking for people with Ph.D.s or those
with B.S./M.S. degrees and 5+ years of industrial experience in storage
systems or related areas with proven technical leadership and innovative
skills. Work will involve system design, algorithmic work, performance
and modelling work, and system-building. Our ultimate goal is to build
working prototypes of innovative storage systems, so systems intuition,
systems building experience and interest in working on experimental
prototypes is particularly valuable. Specific positions may be available
for people with strong performance modelling, simulation and measurement
experience of storage systems.
For programmers, we are looking for people with proven systems building
capabilities with experience in AIX, other UNIX systems and/or NT. We
will be developing high-performance, fault-tolerant, clustered systems,
where previous experience with SMP programming, fault-tolerant message
passing systems, multi-threaded programming, and device driver
programming will be favorably considered. Experience with device
interfaces such as SCSI, ultraSCSI, FC, FCAL, SSA; new PC clustering
hardware/software standards; knowledge of storage
intensive applications like database systems and file systems; and
familiarity with RAID systems, optical drives/jukeboxes and tape drives/
jukeboxes will be important.
